The World We Dreamed Of

The power of choice, compassion and everyday kindness
Many of us, myself included, dreamed of a better world when we were children.
Some might call it innocence. Others might call it naivety.
But what if, as children, we were simply more aligned with our hearts and spirits, before life's experiences, challenges and troubles began to overshadow them?
What if that childhood hope for a kinder, more loving world wasn't something we needed to grow out of, but something we needed to remember?
As adults, reconnecting with that inner child, that sense of wonder, hope and possibility, can sometimes feel like a struggle.
Especially when we look around us, or through our screens, and find ourselves bombarded by a seemingly endless deluge of fear, conflict, division and darkness.
It's easy to become disheartened.
Easy to feel powerless.
Easy to believe that the world we once dreamed of is somehow beyond our reach.
But as adults, we have something incredibly powerful.
We have the ability to choose.
We can choose what we listen to, what we give our attention to, and what we allow to influence our hearts and minds.
We can choose how we respond to information, to circumstances, and, perhaps most importantly, to one another.
We can choose compassion over judgement.
Understanding over condemnation.
Love over hatred.
And hope over fear.
Of course, this doesn't mean ignoring the suffering or difficulties that exist in our world. Nor does it mean pretending that everything is wonderful when clearly, for many, it isn't.
It simply means recognising that even amid life's challenges, we still have opportunities to choose how we meet them.
With every interaction, every conversation, and every moment of awareness, we have an opportunity to pause, breathe, reflect and respond.
And sometimes, that response can make all the difference.
Because the way we respond to life doesn't just shape the world within us.
It can create ripples that reach far beyond us.
A simple smile offered to a stranger.
The warmth of a heartfelt hug.
A moment of patience when frustration would be easier.
Or the willingness to genuinely listen to another person's perspective, not through a lens of judgement, but through one of compassion and understanding.
These may seem like small, insignificant gestures.
But how often do we truly know the impact our kindness has upon another?
A single compassionate interaction might change someone's day.
Perhaps even their outlook on life.
And that kindness may then find its way into someone else's life, creating ripples we may never witness.
As Dr Wayne Dyer famously said:
"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."
Perhaps the better world we dreamed of as children doesn't begin with some extraordinary event, some grand transformation, or someone else coming along to make everything right.
Perhaps it begins much closer to home.
Within our own hearts.
Within our own minds.
Within the everyday choices we make about how we treat ourselves, one another, and the world around us.
And perhaps that hopeful child within us was never quite as naïve as we came to believe.
Perhaps that child understood something beautifully simple that, somewhere along the way, many of us forgot.
That love matters.
That kindness matters.
That how we treat one another matters.
So please, know that you are not powerless.
Know that you can begin changing your inner world, and through your actions, positively influence the world around you.
You don't have to change the entire world today.
You don't have to carry the weight of humanity upon your shoulders.
Sometimes, simply bringing a little more kindness, compassion and understanding into the life of another is enough.
And who knows how far those ripples might travel?
The world we dreamed of as children may not be entirely beyond our reach.
Perhaps, in our own small ways, we can help bring a little more of that world into existence.
We always have a choice.
Choose love.
Choose kindness.
Choose compassion.
For yourself, for others, and for the world we share. 🙏🏽🤍✨️
"Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."
— Gandalf, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
