Open Your Sails: The Art of Surrendering to Life

Finding harmony between the heart, the mind and the flow of creation
My perception, and I emphasise that it is only my own, is that there are cogs within cogs, energies within energies, and egregores within egregores.
Layers upon layers of existence, consciousness and creation, perhaps far beyond anything our minds can fully comprehend.
I sometimes wonder whether, when we begin labelling and defining things within the energetic and metaphysical realms, we may connect with those particular concepts or energies to a greater degree.
But for me, personally, I question whether that is always necessary.
Indeed, I sometimes feel it may even become detrimental if we lose ourselves in the endless pursuit of understanding, identifying and engaging with every perceived force or influence.
I don't believe we necessarily need to call upon individual egregores, angels, gods, goddesses or other energies to find our connection with the divine.
That doesn't mean we cannot, or that such practices are without meaning for others.
It simply means that, for me, the connection is something far simpler.
Our hearts.
That gentle, subtle, yet profoundly powerful connection to what I perceive as the universal creative force.
And perhaps we don't need to search endlessly outside ourselves for something that has been quietly present within us all along.
The Ocean of Consciousness
I often imagine this reality, this realm of consciousness, as a vast and magnificent ocean.
Sometimes its waters are calm, peaceful and beautifully still.
At other times, great storms arise, and powerful waves threaten to overwhelm us.
Within this ocean, I imagine each of us travelling aboard our own magnificent galleon ship.
Our physical and energetic being is the vessel itself.
Our mind is the helm, the great wooden wheel through which we attempt to navigate life's waters.
And for much of our lives, I feel we have been taught to struggle at that helm.
To grip the wheel tightly.
To strain, wrestle and constantly attempt to force our vessel in the direction we believe it should travel.
We exhaust ourselves trying to control every movement, every circumstance and every wave.
Sometimes turning the wheel so relentlessly that we find ourselves travelling in circles, drained of energy, yet seemingly no closer to where we wish to be.
But perhaps we've overlooked something fundamental about our magnificent vessel.
Its true power does not come from the helm alone.
It comes from the sails.
Those great, beautiful sails that rise above us, waiting to be opened.
Waiting to catch the wind.
And in my own spiritual understanding, that wind represents God, the universe, Source, or whatever name we choose to give the great creative force of existence.
We don't need to manufacture the wind.
We don't need to fight it into existence.
We simply need to learn how to open our sails.
To allow that gentle yet powerful force to move through them, carrying us forward with a greater sense of harmony and flow.
Of course, we still have our helm.
Our minds remain important.
We still make choices, navigate challenges, adjust our course and take responsibility for the direction of our lives.
But instead of constantly fighting against the wind, perhaps we can learn to work in harmony with it.
The mind guides the vessel, but the open heart catches the wind.
The Art of Effortless Flow
This reminds me of the Taoist principle of wu wei, often understood as effortless action, or acting in harmony with the natural flow of life.
Not passivity.
Not abandoning responsibility.
And certainly not giving up.
But learning to recognise when effort is necessary and when our constant attempts to control everything are creating unnecessary resistance.
For me, this is where our hearts and intuition become so important.
Learning to listen.
To become still enough to notice the subtle guidance that life may offer.
To recognise the difference between the noise of our fears and the quieter wisdom of our hearts.
And to trust that we don't always need to understand every current beneath the ocean to continue our journey.
The Ripple Effect of Love
Yes, I believe there is a higher creative force underlying existence.
And yes, I believe we each have a meaningful part to play in our individual and collective journey towards greater awareness, compassion and what I perceive as the light of creation.
But I also believe that journey begins within ourselves.
We cannot continually give from an empty cup.
We cannot expect to bring peace into the world while endlessly neglecting the peace within our own hearts.
And perhaps, when we reconnect with that universal force through love, compassion, kindness and intuition, we begin to replenish ourselves.
Our cup becomes fuller.
Not because life suddenly becomes free of storms, but because we discover another way of navigating them.
And from that place of greater inner harmony, we may naturally begin to influence the world around us.
Through our words.
Our choices.
Our compassion.
Our willingness to listen, understand and forgive.
Through the smallest acts of kindness that ripple outward into the lives of others.
I don't believe we necessarily need to force some grand transformation upon the world.
Perhaps transformation begins when enough of us learn to live with greater awareness, love and harmony within ourselves.
One heart influencing another.
One act of kindness inspiring the next.
One ripple becoming many.
And perhaps, together, those ripples can help create the changes so many of us long to see.
These are simply my own perceptions, reflections and beliefs as I continue navigating this extraordinary mystery we call existence.
I don't claim to possess all the answers.
I'm simply learning, like everyone else, how to navigate the ocean.
And perhaps, rather than exhausting ourselves by constantly wrestling with the helm, we might occasionally remember to look upwards.
To loosen our grip.
To breathe.
And to open our sails.
For perhaps the wind we've been searching for has been there all along.
